WCCG Featured Artist: Alan Davis

December 27, 2010

After a teaching career in Art, including twenty years at Deal Secondary School he is now painting and print-making in Kingsdown and West Cork.

Using a combination of woodblock prints on fabric, with vibrant oil-colour, Alan has produced a range of images reflecting his deep interest in celtic culture and our colourful local heritage.

His landscapes illustrate vernacular architecture and the passing of traditional rural life. Having a base in Ireland, he regularly exhibits there. He is a member of White Cliffs Creatives Guild which manages the Charlton Arts Centre, Dover, has work permanently on display there and regularly contributes to its exhibitions.

Speaking of his entry for the Community Art Competition Alan says, “What Dover has in abundance is History, and we should be proud of it and celebrate it in as many ways as possible. This seemed a chance to do just that, and so I made a montage of images from a range of my paintings that manages to cover Dover’s story from the Bronze Age Boat, through the Romans, its role as a Cinque Port, the Napoleonic period, Hellfire corner and into modern times. It is intentionally light-hearted in approach, but I hope it stimulates both locals and visitors to find out more of Dover’s rich past in our excellent Museum, just a few steps away from the Big Screen.”
